Why Edison Chen Was Almost “Person Of The Year” In 2008

edisonchen2When I first read this story on the Shanghaiist blog today I was stunned.  How could Edison Chen, the Hong Kong celebrity at the center of the online sex photo scandal, be nominated as one of the most outstanding persons of the year in 2008, along with others like Barack Obama, Dalai Lama and Wen Jiabao?  Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) conducted the poll, and Obama was narrowly chosen over Chen.  On further reflection, it’s true that Edison was one of the most talked about stories last year, the scandal broke in January 2008, and it ignited a debate about the bounds of internet content, morality and privacy, so I guess it’s all a matter of how “outstanding” is defined.

  2. Of course if he was a celeb in the US instead of Hong Kong, he’d have his own reality TV show, released his own album, make more movies and demanded more money for them as well as be an heiress to an international hotel chain…. well maybe not the last one but you see my point.

  3. @dedlam Yep, it would have been Paris Hilton all over again.
